DNA Prepared from ATCC Genuine Cultures®

ATCC offers purified DNA from well-characterized and authenticated microbial strains.

Genomic DNA from ATCC Genuine Cultures is available from:

Microbial Strains

Genomic DNA from ATCC Genuine Cultures can save you the time and expense of isolating DNA yourself. Applications include:

  • Construction of genomic libraries
  • Southern hybridization
  • PCR
  • Identification and comparison at the genus, species and strain levels

The package size of Genomic DNA prepared from bacteria, fungi and yeast is in the process of being changed. Genomic DNA will be available only in the 5-µg package size. The 10-µg size is discontinued when the 5-µg size becomes available. The ATCC catalog number will change to add '-5' as a suffix. For example: ATCC catalog number 10556D has been changed to 10556D-5 for the new 5-µg size. The package size of DNA prepared from Mycoplasma remains unchanged at either 10-ng or 50-ng.

High-quality DNA from ATCC has been isolated under aseptic conditions to prevent cross-contamination. Batches are evaluated for integrity, purity and quality by several methods, including:

  1. Agarose gel electrophoresis
  2. Spectrophotometry
  3. Suitability for amplification by PCR
  4. Sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene (first ~500 base pairs) consistent with the sequence of the source organism for bacteria
  5. ITS sequencing for fungi and yeast consistent with the sequence of the source organism

We've expanded our quality control testing for the 5-µg size to include the determination of the total amount of DNA by PicoGreen® measurement. Genomic DNA available in the 5-µg size that has been tested using the additional PicoGreen® measurement is shaded in GREEN on the list below.

We have a poster that lists ATCC strains that have been fully sequenced. Contact us by e-mail for a free copy.

Format & Shipping Information

Most genomic DNA from bacteria and yeasts is shipped dried and should be stored +4°C to 8°C upon receipt. Store at -20°C if stored for more than 6 months.
Molecular Grade Water from ATCC may be used for rehydrating dried DNA.

The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) process is covered by patents owned by Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc. Use Of The PCR process requires a license.
